August is the beginning of school for some parts of the country whereas August is in the middle of the summer for others. An ocean theme is the perfect marriage between these two. You can end your school year or start off your school year with with a beach/ ocean theme. These activities can work for you either way!   Most experiments utilize a jar for this experiment. I did not have a jar handy so I used a regular drinking glass. You will receive the same result as long as its in glass cylinder.  What creates the fireworks display? I will not get too technical (science isn't my thing) but this is a simple density demonstration. The food coloring dissolves into the water but does not dissolve into the oil. The food coloring floats at the surface of the glass since the oil is less dense than the water. However, the colors will soon sink to the bottom since they are heavier than the oil. The firework display occurs as the colors dissolve into the water. Isn't it cool? Ice Cream in A Bag is a classic stem/treat activity. I used to do this every year with my kindergarten students. Now that I am a mom, I am able to do this with my own children. My son is 2.5 yrs old and he loved shaking the bag to make ice cream. He loved eating the fruits of his labor even more!!! This activity is perfect for a summer treat or a lesson unit on food or dairy in particular. Here's how to make this recipe: Ingredients  1 cup half and half 2 large zip top bags (1 large and 1 small) 2 tbsp sugar 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract 3 cups ice 1/3 cup kosher salt Directions: 1. Place the ice and salt into a large zip top bag.   My son could not resist photo bombing while I was videoing the ice cream steps. 2.  Using the small ziptop bag, place half and half, sugar, and vanilla. The Magic Milk Experiment was one of the first science activities my son experienced. I decided it was way past due to post it. I did not have my website at the time I did the experiment. It was cool to go back into time and see how little my boys were. Time truly flies when you are having fun. Young children may be unable to grasp the science behind the experiment but they can still have fun watching the colors dance around!  What is the Milk Experiment?  The milk experiment uses milk, food coloring and dish soap. The magic in the milk experiment is the demonstration of surface tension between molecules. Milk is comprised of   minerals, proteins and fats.  When the milk combines with the dish the soap, it causes the fat molecules in the milk to break up.
