Ice Cream in A Bag

Ice Cream in A Bag is a classic stem/treat activity. I used to do this every year with my kindergarten students. Now that I am a mom, I am able to do this with my own children. My son is 2.5 yrs old and he loved shaking the bag to make ice cream. He loved eating the fruits of his labor even more!!! This activity is perfect for a summer treat or a lesson unit on food or dairy in particular. Here's how to make this recipe:

Ingredients

1 cup half and half

2 large zip top bags (1 large and 1 small)

2 tbsp sugar

1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

3 cups ice

1/3 cup kosher salt

Directions:

1. Place the ice and salt into a large zip top bag.

My son could not resist photo bombing while I was videoing the ice cream steps.

2. Using the small ziptop bag, place half and half, sugar, and vanilla. Make sure there is no excess air inside of the bag before you close it.

3. Place the small ziptop bag into the large bag with the ice/salt. Shake vigorously. It will take about 10 minutes for the mixture to harden into an ice cream consistency.

4. Add sprinkles or your preferred toppings. Enjoy!

50 Covid Family Friendly Ways to Honor Earth Day (Doing our part at home)

Taking Care of Our Earth Last year marked 50 years of celebrating Earth Day. Earth Day began in 1970 after Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin, decided to organize a national “teach in” to educate people about protecting the environment. Since then, multiple environmental agencies have developed such as the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as environmental laws such as the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, and the Endangered Species Act. There are small things we can do at home that can make a huge impact on the planet. As a parent, I feel it's important to teach my children to care about the environment. It is our children that will inherit the Earth and they need to know their actions can make an impact- positive or negative. Below you will find things you can do as a family to help the environment. 50 Ways We Can Do Our Part At Home Turn off the faucet - This may be an obvious way to save the planet. However, many of us (me included at times) allo...

Preschool Transition Tips and Songs

What is a transition? A transition is a period where you are moving from one activity to another. Transitions can be a trying time and the hardest part of your day. But it doesn’t have to be. Transitions need to be consistent (scheduled) and as short as possible. Children often act out when they are waiting too long for the next activity to start. Minimize your transitions so that your children are not waiting longer than 5 minutes. Fill the time with a song appropriate for the activity- sing a song about food during lunch time, sing a clean up song after center time, sing a goodbye song at dismissal. Planning your transitions in advance will make your life and your child’s life a lot easier. Choose a song or phrase for each activity so your child will know what to expect. Singing the same song or playing a song for a particular activity will provide your child with stability and a sense of control. There are so many things out of a child’s control that they often resist transit...

Earth Day

Earth Day is almost upon us. In year 2020, we celebrated our 50th Earth Day. Covid could not even stop virtual events from happening globally. Once a year, people become aware of our actions and inquire about ways to help protect our environment. In fact, Earth Day can be everyday. There are small things we can do at home that can make a huge impact on the planet. As a parent, I feel it's important to teach my children to care about the environment. It is our children that will inherit the Earth and they need to know their actions can make an impact- positive or negative.   We can...
