Ultimate Ice Cream Resource

July is National Ice Cream Month. I decided to take advantage and celebrate National Ice Cream Month by compiling a list of educational and fun activities that your family can enjoy.

Ice Cream Crafts

I absolutely love  recycled crafts because I believe it teaches children to use creativity to make a new use of something. Plus, recycled crafts save you money from purchasing art supplies. The following crafts require items you most likely already have at home.

Sprinkles Sensory Bag

Sensory bags are a great activity if you are looking for a mess free option. I sealed the bag with duct tape and placed colorful washi tape on top. If you have rough tots, you may consider doubling the bag.

The usual activity you see associated with a sprinkle sensory bag is letter or number writing exercise. I discovered a (I'm quite I'm not the only one lol) couple more activities you can do with the sprinkle sensory bag.

1) Handprints- my 18 MO enjoyed making handprints in the sprinkles. He experimented with moving the sprinkles around in the bag.

2. Letter Formation and Letter Sounds Identification- My 2.5 YO was having difficulty forming the letters so I began modeling how to do the letter forms. I wrote random letters onto the bag for him to identify. We also demonstrated the sound for each letter. At the same time, DJ was matching upper and lower case letters to the letters written onto the bag.

Ice Cream Sensory rice with "pom pom sprinkles"

I got cute plate from the Dollar Tree. I used the plate as a tray for the children to place the "sprinkles" during play. Rice is an excellent sensory bin filler as it is inexpensive and long lasting. I have sensory rice from a year ago in good playing condition.

July is National Ice Cream Month. We decided to make our own ice cream during our Ice Cream unit.

This was one of the best stem projects we've done to date. It is surprisingly fun, easy and simple to make your own ice cream at home. Ice Cream activities are typically done in the summer but this activity can be done during a food unit or anytime you want to have a little fun. This recipe has 4 only steps and takes less than 10 minutes to make!! Scroll to the bottom of the post for the video.

Ingredients

1 cup half and half 2 tbsp sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla extract 3 cups of ice

1/3 cup of kosher salt 2 zip top bags (1 gallon, 1 quart)

Directions

1. Measure 3 cups of ice and 1/3 cup of kosher salt and place into a large ziptop bag. Set aside.

2. Combine half and half, sugar, vanilla extract into the smaller bag. Push out the excess air and close the bag. Place this bag into the large bag on top of the ice and salt. Close the bag. Make sure it is sealed tight before the next step.

3. Shake, Shake, Shake!!!! It will take 7 minutes or more for the mixture to harden into ice cream. Helpers can make this step extra fun!!!

4. Once the mixture hardens you are able to remove the ice cream and serve. Optional: Add sprinkles or other toppings. Enjoy!!

Earth Day

Earth Day is almost upon us.  Earth Day began in 1970 after Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin, decided to organize a national “teach in” to educate people about protecting the environment. Since then, multiple environmental agencies have developed such as the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as environmental laws such as the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, and the Endangered Species Act. In year 2020, we celebrated our 50th Earth Day. Covid could not even stop virtual events from happening globally. Once a year, people become aware of our actions and inquire about ways to help protect our environment. In fact, Earth Day can be everyday. There are small things we can do at home that can make a huge impact on the planet. As a parent, I feel it's important to teach my children to care about the environment. It is our children that will inherit the Earth and they need to know their actions can make an impact- positive or negative.   We can do little

Mother's Day

Mother's Day Crafts and Activities  Mother’s Day is right around the corner! Mother’s Day is a great time to share love and appreciation for all of the special mother figures in your lives. I truly believe that it takes a village to raise a child and your child can not be loved TOO much. My mom and I were very close. We had a little store in my elementary school. My dad would give me a few dollars to purchase a gift at the school’s gift store. I was so excited to pick out my own gift and present it to my mom. While store bought gifts are great, I believe  homemade gifts from my children are the BEST. Check out  Plumprint  If you are looking for a way to preserve all of those homemade cards and even 3-D art. I am not being paid to endorse Plumprint but wanted to share this company because I think it's cool to have the option to capture all of my childrens’ work someday. (At ages 1 and 2 - it would be a very small book at this point lol).    I compiled a HUGE list of Mother’s D

50 Covid Family Friendly Ways to Honor Earth Day (Doing our part at home)

Taking Care of Our Earth Last year marked 50 years of celebrating Earth Day.
