Beach Ball Glyph
Memorial Day is the unofficial kick-off to summertime. Most schools are either out or winding down. Learning does not have to stop just because school has. Retain those mental muscles by providing this fun glyph activity.
I love glyphs as an introduction to organizing and graphing data. Children (like us) are social and love to learn about their friends so this activity is perfect!
I used glyph activities as subject matter for my bulletin boards. But you may be wondering.... What is a glyph?
A glyph is a pictorial representation of data. The pictures in glyphs are used to collect and display data. It is a more modern form of hieroglyphics (early writing using pictures).
How does the Beach Ball Glyph collect data?
The glyph has a legend which can be used to decipher the pictorial data. Each number on the beach ball corresponds to a personal characteristic in which the student can identify themselves. For instance, the first one indicates whether the student is a girl or a boy.
Other ways to use this printable
As an educator and now a mom, I am always looking for resources that can be used in multiple ways. Glyph activities can be used for prek but are better suited for kinders and older who are able to read and comprehend instructions. This printable can be used in at least 4 other ways.
COLOR BY NUMBER
Choose the first color option in legend to use as a color by number worksheet. I always review the color words first with the student(s) and have students color the words. It makes referring back to the directions much easier. It also helps pre-reading students to refer to the color instead of the word.
NUMBER IDENTIFICATION
I used this activity with my 3 year old to review numbers 1-6. We recited the numbers in order and pointed to each number as it was called. I encouraged him to put a sticker on the number the second time we recited the numbers.
ROLL AND COLOR
Add a little variety and excitement by adding a die or number cube. I made my own number cube using an old photo block, tape, and construction paper.
COUNT AND COLOR
Encourage your child to count the number on the beach ball and place the items to represent the number. I used bottled water caps but you can use pouch caps, pom poms, erasers, noodles, etc.
If you have any other ways to use this printable don't hesitate to share! I hope you enjoy!
